+We all need to work to our strengths to tackle the problem of waste management and one of the key players on the ground in Lamu helping to build local community capacity is @lamuenvironment (LEF). They support locally led environmental conservation to protect, preserve and restore Lamu County, Kenya now, and for the future.
+Since 2021, LEF has had a focus on waste management as one of their key areas of interest supporting 4 projects across Lamu to begin building foundations for improved waste management. Those projects are:
+♻️ Fanya Safi Waste Coalition that bought together groups from Lamu, Shela and Manda for the first time to collect 20+ tonnes of plastic
+♻️ Kijitoni Revamp with SERG  and @earth_loveltd which has seen the group transform a dumpsite into a waste recovery centre to ensure maximum recycling of dumped materials
+♻️ @baharimoja in Mkokoni that has facilitated huge beach and community cleanups to collect marine debris and restore the environment to encourage more turtle nesting sites
+♻️ Usafi Mtaani, a brand-new project that will pave the way for door-to-door waste collections in Lamu Town through securing community buy-in and support
+None of us can do it in our own but now with our dedicated recovery and recycling center in Lamu and with a collaborative approach, and support to the grassroots from organizations like LEF we stand a good chance at bringing plastic pollution to a halt! Asante sana @lamuenvironment !

+We’re widening our network of community members collecting plastics and last week we visited a women-led community group in Matandoni Village who collected 454kg of plastics for our recycling centre.
+
+Our community liaison officer Abubakr, held a community educational session teaching them about financial incentives, collecting plastics and more opportunities for collaboration within The Flipflopi.
+
+Visiting communities like this using roads that are not paved for cars, let alone tractors can be difficult but so rewarding when we gain new community collectors which means cleaner and healthier neighbourhoods for our island.
+
+What was particularly exciting about visiting this community was learning about their mangrove nursery that’s helping to restore mangroves in their neighbourhood that have been choked by plastics and deforested for wood. We’re looking forward to supporting them in organising clean-ups for the mangroves close their community 🌳

+Our team in Lamu joined millions of people across the globe in taking action this #worldcleanupday

+Together with local partners @lamcot_lamu, @wwf_kenya @lamuenvironment #serg and #lamucounty, we cleaned up the shore on Manda Island, a remote and hard to access beach that receives plastics from the ocean. 
+
+Thanks to all the organisations and community members who came out to #cleanup and successfully removed hundreds of bags of plastic waste littering our environment.
+
+Special thanks to the residents of Manda Island for sponsoring the event and Lamu County Muncipality for supporting logistics.

+In the last 15 months, we've recovered a whopping 200,000kg of plastic waste from the Lamu Archipelago through our network of 700+ community collectors spanning over 30+ neighbourhoods across the Island.
+
+Thanks to The SMEP Programme, we’re redirecting these waste plastics from littering our natural environment, entering the ocean, being burnt and ingested by animals and are instead giving them a permanent life by transforming them into heritage boats and furniture.

+The use of plastic woven raffia sacks (In Kenya called “gunias”) for bulk transportation of commodities is rapidly growing globally, with increased use as an economical and lightweight packaging for commodities in the agriculture, construction, and food grain industry to name a few. 
+
+According to one market estimate, the raffia sector accounts for 2 million tons of polyethylene and polypropylene polymers (Raffia: Industry & Sales Trend Analysis, 2019).
+
+Our monthly collections over the past 14 months with a monthly average of 13-15 tonnes have shown 30% to be packaging material including high volumes of raffia sacks which in theory should be fully recyclable but have proven to be difficult due to poor manufacturing. 
+
+We are currently testing their efficacy as feedstock in our extrusion process to make plastic lumber as well as other forms of upcycling to create value added products and ideally to be able to recycled as a feedstock for its original purpose.
+
+The process in all stages has proven very difficult (sorting, crushing, washing, extruding) because of how thin and light they are, and the dirt and prints release nasty fumes, resulting in lots of air pockets in the end product.
+
+After many trials to make the best out of this material, we were able to purchase an AGGLOMERATOR (thanks to the #smep programme) which makes clumps out of the thin plastics that are easier to process.
+
+First results look good, still more testing and analysing. 
+
+Hopefully it will enable us to soon turn the accumulated 30+ tonnes of plastic bags into something durable and valuable 🦾
