i have history with the Node.JS toolchain and related languages (HTML and derivatives, CSS and derivatives), Unity is forcing me how to wrap my head around object-oriented programming with C# even though i REALLY wish i could stick with raw C++ (which i had to learn for my associates in network engineering)
did i mention linux? linux is cool, even tried to build my own desktop environment a few times
i also run my own homelab, so of COURSE i had to learn linux
but i don't run linux directly on my servers
i use VMWare ESXi as a hypervisor
(yes i know that's not open-source, but it's a homelabber's go-to hypervisor if you can get your hands on a license key "FOR LAB USE ONLY" 
(and I could easily switch over to Proxmox if directed to by a community such as this)

I just checked https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Category:Extensions & https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/API:Main_page. Simply awesome - that makes it super easy to add or embed Discourse discussions. Also on the authentication side it seems we can have SSO; - Discourse already provides a long list of social media sign-on as well an extensive user model (ACL & trust points). Ok, I think I am all set and now it's just time to get hands dirty.
As for PDF compilation (manuals)- Wikimedia has a few extensions - using almighty 'Pandoc'.
Possibly I may need API access to combine PreciousPlastic/PlasticHub & related OSE content into a new project called 'OSR-Plastic'.
Is there something like custom fields ? In Joomla or Wordpress they called it CCK (Custom Content or so). That would enable to create custom forms so data can be entered a little more guided. Something like a content template for authoring.

I think the more difficult part is integration, eg: writing plugins for other apps or libraries as well dealing with compilers - in particular - doing cross platform code.
Choosing a good IDE also impact a lot your learning progress; I was really happy with Visual Studio and VissualAssistX; later on I moved back to Gentoo; only because I could emulate or build anything there.
I think you don't write games per se in C anymore - game logic, etc.. is mostly done in embeddable languages as Lua or others. What's done in C are the render, physics, network or AI engine and then 'bindings' come into play to use it on higher languages.
As another path in, and also really rewarding is writing for micro-controllers (arduino, real fun stuff); there are really harsh conditions - same great like learning to drive on a real shitty car after doing game engines for a while (PS1,...) I really enjoyed to get my hands on real hardware after (VR,...)

Maybe I'll join another school to get more engineering skills (I've got EPFZ & EPFL closeby... ), or bootstrap a lab/farm with freelance work, to learn by doing, self-study with others, etc

There's no API yet to integrate it well and I don't think it's helpful to master your content creation skills. It might be just in the way. Writing documentation can be incredibly complex. Even for simple cases, I am ending up with a custom DSL to cover all edge cases and features needed, eg: multi-lingual, responsiveness, SEO, semantic web, etc.. - all offline tools, and yet far from 'perfect'.
I understand however, we need 'typings' for 'web' 'language' - to make Google, and AI happy.

we can certainly see what open source engineering can do - actually pretty clear and busy for the next years, implementing a new stack (documentation/marketplace/library/support, ...) which allows me to maintain verticals as 'PreciousPlastic', my own 'company's infrastructure, and perhaps OSE.
Tech however changed a lot over the last 5 years and it became terribly fragmented.
However, I believe that a good but disposable framework could indeed make a change, eg: helpful in developing countries, remove bottlenecks for talents/makers, etc...
Other than software, I am trying to develop a modular kit about recycling (PP's aftermath), a great use-case - but lab/class-room grade, with enough extensibility to turn it into 'products' (dreaming

Other than using Opensource as marketing gag, it might be probably easier to identify where OS would make most sense, eg: semi-conductor, software, Fablabs, schools, knowledge transfer.

most of the data I kept maintaining and dealing with came from random systems, APIs, formats, .. a nice mess, making it almost impossible to contribute, or even improve anything at all. Are you an OSE wiki admin that's asking what pages should be updated?, No, I am just a random trespasser, curious to know what OS could do for the collective - The wiki pages aren't exactly sexy, nor helpful extending the kit. I think once migrated in OSR, I could imagine that it's a bit more accessible (collaboration, ... ). 1 An interesting time to be alive. If Discord was an open, ethical platform - I'd be comfy with this. In the meantime, while corporations and companies continue to try to validate their existence, indeed, turning this off is a slight help. This is assuming they don't already infringe on privacy anyhow, usually through incompetence. OSE needs more back-up plans that don't involve grants and governments and corporations whatsoever. : there's plenty of cash in Silicon Valley, folks just dont know what to do with it, you just need to be clear and concise about the what, the who (very important, and difficult since good folks are busy with something else, ...) and the how. To give you an idea, developing OS machines takes around 100-200k setup fee, then another 20-30k a month, and that's just for subscriptions, software, ... sallery goes on top, another 10-20k - for a single dev. Multiply this by the number of departments, sales, research, lab, ... 
- similar happens to 'green / eco' products, folks just don't have the time, nor able to pay premium ... 1 I can add numbers on it, fixes, problems, ... For now we have lets say an ok framework to move/respond fast to customer requests, whilst growing / cultivating a knowledge base (with international scope, and support for developing countries, thanks to @katharinaelleke 1

'Game based E-Learning' (as Elon successfully implemented for his kids, in his own school, kids learn quickly, and with joy - see also Japanese education system) : well, let's ignore the fact the world being on fire, people die in mass from starvation, or climate change, and preferably ignoring the internet 98% full of sh** (decreasing, thank you Tiktok, providing us a place to speak out, unpolished, authentic ...) - just as in the current monetary system, humans and resources have been entirely removed from the equation - not sure there's much to gain with games, IMHO - I've been part of a sophisticated Game-Based-ELearning platform which now just catches dust, in a drawer (100M taxpayer money wasted - Virtools/Dassault - Systems & Teleca-UK, laughed out by Rockstar games However, I think a AI/Human aid powered remote assistance via AR & whatnot, fully aware of inventory, your skills could help with design (on the go), assembly, planning and on-the-go documentation. Let's see, first things first : concepts, structures, ... all still oustanding ...

1. a few years blood and sweat to master the process of deforming plastic waste
2. develop the tooling to find suitable clients who actually have need for that; as alternative to wood (I am treehuger too:) - using SerpAPI, harvesting GoogleMap
3. develop even more tooling to spot the benefits, and get a clear understanding how this may work for them
4. more tooling to craft email campaigns, involving a DSL, leveraging AI as well; - I could probably also 'just pay' agencies, in the 5-6 digit figures
5. add analytics, for A/B testing, analyzing what phrases / content worked better - that requires a deep understanding of the always changing web tech - another huge mess
6. after requests roll in, Anne & me am busy hours a week answering clients; and of course, they do have always different requirements (back to square one)

- well, there are probably a million reasons why good things wont happen (https://www.tiktok.com/@debsahoy/video/7448229598539615510), kinda gave up on the 'save the planet / humanity' story long ago but perhaps we could collect all the good out there (projects aiming for open values, ...), make it interactive, trustworthy (there is no such thing as decentral ... and provide the means of growing in certain directions. OS (software & hardware) became an utter mess and folks have usually no time or resources ...

currently I am stuck with pnpm workspaces (mono repo), turbo, and luckily some AI aids, any objections for docs, Astro (really neat) to replace Jekyll/Hugo - feels like a can of flies but still easier to extend & read - most is written in Typescript; would have loved Rust instead but harder to extend ...
