@Alexa still in the store but here is a Carbon Arc Gouging torch

9:27 PM
Oh wow look at that!

This one has the holes directly under the rod but I think it could be on the handle
Avatar
That makes sense - It's a lot better now that I can see a working example. Very cool!

Here is how it attaches

gotcha - just threads together real nice

Normal stinger handles slip over the cable first and are attached by a single screw to the hinge mechanism
8:14 PM
This example measures 6.153 inches (156.28mm) in OAL and 4.526 inches (114.96mm) from the start of the hinge section to the base
8:14 PM
8:15 PM
An up close example from the hinge cut out to the base
8:15 PM
8:18 PM
The OD on the ridge was measured at 1.073 inches (27.25mm) and the ID was found to be 0.825 inches (20.95mm)
8:18 PM
8:21 PM
From the handle mounting hole to the bottom of the handle was 5.694 inches (144.62mm)
8:28 PM
The width of the lever section appears to be .758 inches(19.25mm)
8:29 PM
8:31 PM
8:32 PM
The length of the lever section appears to be 1.65 inches (41.91mm)
8:34 PM
I estimate the radius at the bottom to be between .325-.5 inches (8.25-12.7mm)

I need something for pipe insulation in a crawlspace πŸ₯²
Avatar
There are two things you need to buy
4:40 PM
1) pipe insulation foam
4:40 PM
2) a pipe hearing wire setup
4:41 PM
Heating wire* lol
Avatar

I'm trying to avoid foam and active heating elements

@HopefulMGowner in regards to producing stock sheets at various thicknesses, what about large sheet molds? Could you cast a 4’x8’ mold for sheet metal?

Indeed. Looking forward to making use of a donated microwave oven that's just been collecting dust

ooh! lol this reminds me that michael was considering designing an open source industrial food processor...i don't think he has a repo on eco libre about it just yet tho... anyways this would be a neat way to go about that... (edited)

Nice! I've also had tentative ideas of using such process for producing a mulcher/wood chipper or plastic shredder for use in 3D printer filament extruding. So many possibilities...

Would conversion projects fit here you think? I've got two in mind a printable carbon arc gouging set up and a gas conversion setup for a cheap fluxcore welder

I suppose. What are you thinking of using them for?

CAG is basicly a precision weld/metal eraser used in repairs (like if the old part is worn out or rusted) and the gas conversion is just to make a dirt cheap MIG machine
Avatar
HopefulMGowner 3/26/2025 6:26 PM
I have now seen a 3,000 dollar MIG spool gun up close
6:26 PM
It looks like it would cost 50-150 dollars to build
6:31 PM
A spool gun is basicly a trigger activated printing extruder capable of extruding at 700-1000 IPM (316-425 mmps)

Add another thing to the idea pile A vibratory stress relieving machine It has an variable AC motor and produced a vibration between 10 and 220 hz with 17 newtons of force where it sits firmly connected to a weldment and tests its harmonic frequency till it hits its resonance frequency and continues hitting it to relieve stress from welding or machining

Do you mean a peener?
Avatar
HopefulMGowner 4/2/2025 3:48 AM
No
3:48 AM
I don't think so
Avatar
Ok. I have worked on a design weld cell that had a peener on a Fanuc robot arm... The weld was multiple passes of 3/8" weld
Avatar
HopefulMGowner 4/2/2025 3:53 AM
Did it vibrate the part at its resonce frequency?
3:53 AM
If so it might be
Avatar
No it was stress relief
Avatar
HopefulMGowner 4/2/2025 3:53 AM
OK sounds like it is a peener
Avatar
They had zero feedback to the peener... It was a "smack it till the job is done" design

I got a junky stick welder box from work. It seems decent so i MIGHT mess around with that sometime (Granted welding leads not included and those are pricey on their own πŸ’€) (Also no flash curtain or fume extraction/ppe included either (although i already got a hood + jacket main thing is LUNGS ))
9:28 PM
This is less likely as again i’m not in the best area for experimentation but i could try and use it as a luxury version of that mini arc furnace β€œThe King of Random” made way back.
