My attempt to abstract the abstract -- This is the second of two case studies in making a replicatable materials library. "The first case study, FiberEUse, is linked to recycled glass and carbon fiber-reinforced polymers, mainly thermosetting, for small-format 3D printers. " https://fibereuselibrary.com/ (edited)

"RepMat, deals with recycled thermoplastics and biomass scraps or by-products in large-format 3D printers. " "The “Materials Library System”, was developed to share and build new knowledge on circular materials for additive manufacturing, fostering collaborative distributed networks. This open source tool, made of a physical and virtual part, can showcase new materials (divulgative use) or guide the investigation of emerging materials and technologies in different contexts, i.e., labs, makerspaces, and studios (experimental use). " "[The Physical and Virtual Libraries] are both are divided in three main groups: the Recyclate Library, collecting the secondary raw materials, the Materials Library, collecting flat material samples, and the Product Library, collecting 3D sample parts, cut-offs, or scaled parts of potential applications. The physical and virtual parts of the RepMat library are connected [using QR codes]." @303adastra @Alexa the library groupings reminds me somewhat of our recent discussion on classifying inputs as either parts and tools... even though this specific project is a little different in aims than what we were talking about. but i def like the handling of circular materials. I do like that naming system in the fibereuselibrary link đź‘€ Rather unlike my sad attempts in the D3D Pro docs lol

Sounds like a contract manufacturing business model: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contract_manufacturer
A contract manufacturer (CM) is a manufacturer that contracts with a firm for components or products (in which case it is a turnkey supplier). It is a form of outsourcing. A contract manufacturer performing packaging operations is called copacker or a contract packager. Brand name companies focus on product innovation, design and sales, while th...

The customer brings the requirements, and there is a bidding war between various contract manufacturers.

https://www.s-series.org/s2000m/about-s2000m/ S2000M is the specification that NATO chose for materials management
The specification S2000M defines the processes, procedures and provides the information for data exchange to be used for material management throughout the lifecycle of a product.

Yes, that is what I mean

Contract manufacturing can be the money driver: someone wants an open source tractor, for example, and a contracting manufacturer prints out the parts and assembles the tractor. There can a network of various contract manufacturers and suppliers per bioregion, all with the OSHW certification. The result is a custom-built, OSHW tractor at a fraction of the price of a conventional proprietary tractor. (edited)

This is how we bring manufacturing back to America: Why depend on imported parts when we can print them out ourselves?
