Passive self-watering 3D-printed vegetable pot capable of growing sweet potatoes, inspired by the chinampa (floating garden bed) - multiplanetaryhomestead/reprap-chinampa
3D printers have been becoming really fast recently, yet there is still one big physical challenge that holds them back and this is how fast you can get the material in the nozzle to melt. The thermal conductivity of plastics is almost by two orders of magnitude lower than the one in brass for examp

A Volcano hotend is a variation of the regular V6 hotends where the meltzone is 8.5 mm longer to give 3D printing filament more time to melt for higher flow capabilities. Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) is a colourless organic thermoplastic polymer in the polyaryletherketone (PAEK) family, used in engineering applications. It was invented in November 1978 and brought to market in the early 1980s by part of Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) that later became Victrex PLC.

there's probably a happy medium to be had in terms of centralization vs decentralization

You do make a compelling case. Further into the book it dives deeper into smaller and smaller scale operations down to a size that primarily serves a local community. Micro enterprises are also discussed.
I feel that the book makes an attempt at encouraging people to work on distributed production because it’s more human scale. Large capital intensive production is definitely well established and the smaller side of things is lacking. To find that balance we need to be focused creating more opportunities for the little guy in the short and medium terms. :)

So I want to be able to manufacture any of the GVCS machines in the future. However, to do that, I need to be able to covert the raw materials into useful feedstock (in the case of things like lime -> concrete, iron -> steel, etc.). I also want to be able to make any necessary shape out of metal alloys and/or plastics.
11:12 PM
The plastics can mostly be handled by the 3D Printer so I'm mostly good there,
11:12 PM
but what tools do you recommend for making nearly any shape out of metal?
11:12 PM
Do I just need a mill and lathe?
11:13 PM
Am I missing any important machines and functions or could a mill & lathe get my like 80% of the way there?
