Hi Josh,
I am following up on the 3D Printer workshop that we discussed briefly on the phone.
Here's my 10,000 ft view:
Proposed weekend: August 2-3 (whichever day is best for your schedule)
Workshop length: one 6-8 hour day
Max attendees: 30 people/15 tickets
Ticket info: $99 for a ticket. Each ticket covers two attendees. People under age 18 must come with a guardian over 18 as their second person. No attendees under age 12.
Target demographic: middle and high school students with an interest in STEM topics who do not have access to this type of instruction at school.
What I will do:
- Donate five (5) event tickets (10 attendees) to the YMCA for financial assistance members or other community members that the Y recommends. ($495 value)
- Send over marketing materials (Flyers for printing and posting, marketing copy for social media and website posts, etc)
- Bring in and carry away all of the workshop supplies, equipment, materials, etc.
- Be present the entire event day and run the event (I will have extra workshop assistants there as well)
- I will provide a light lunch for the attendees (pizzas or a sub platter is my thought)
- If the class sells out, I will donate the machine to the YMCA. You can then keep it for classes/programming or give it to whomever you wish. (Let's discuss this point too)
What I would like to ask of you:
- Provide the event space at the Y with room for 35 people (let's discuss rates and date/time) that has power, a TV, tables, chairs, etc. (The U-shaped birthday party layout should be perfect)
- Take payments for the event at the welcome center/online (if you pay processing fees I can cover those out of what I take at the end)
- Disburse funds for any purchased tickets to me a few weeks before the event date to cover supply costs. Any tickets sold in the last couple weeks can be taken care of after.
- Include a media release/waiver and some other terms in the registration agreement
- Post the marketing materials for the event on your social media, website, and some paper copies around the building and the welcome center. I.e. help get the word out
- Post event pictures from the event on the above platforms after the event is over
- Take a cool picture with us in front of the 3D printer when done (optional)
Workshop content:
- A presentation on where to find free and open source software, 3D models, and other resources online
- A group build of a 3D printer from a kit of parts
- A tutorial on how to operate a 3D printer
- Open Q&A about the above topics
Items I will provide:
- Full booklet of detailed printer assembly instructions for each ticket holder (150ish pages)
- A USB drive with free software for making, editing, and printing 3D models for each ticket holder
- All of the printer parts
- Hand tools for assembly
- The donated 3D printer for the Y, assuming a sold out class
The longer-winded narrative:
I am releasing all of the slide decks, documentation, pictures, video, USB drive files, etc under an open and permissive license. This will give you unlimited access to everything that I am using for basically any purpose so long as I get credit and you distribute any changes under the same license terms. (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/)
That means if anyone misses the event they can watch all of the content online and learn all of the same things. The event participants are paying for the hands on build experience activities and the classroom setting where they can ask questions and get instant feedback from me, in addition to the materials they will take home as mentioned above. This is designed to have the maximum positive impact on our community while still covering my supply costs and time. The YMCA is well positioned to help me access the people who I feel need this event the most, and I'm hoping that this offering will help boost attention back to the Y and it's various important missions.
